This Thursday, Transition Saint Clair Shores shall be showing "The End of Suburbia." For me, seeing this documentary for the first time brought everything together concerning consumerism, .
My entire life, I had known that oil and other fossil fuels are a finite resource. This fact is simply an extension of the fact that it takes millions of years of time and pressure and heat to create fossil fuels and that there is simply no way for us to create more of them on a human time scale.
I had studied how dependent the United States and the global economy is upon oil in geography class in high school and began to look at oil use statistics, and the results were staggering. The combination of these ideas was ultimately a sinking feeling and the question:
How long can we continue to increase the oil that we use each year while we draw down a finite resource?
The End of Suburbia and the Peak Oil issue really got me thinking about what the implications for society are for when fossil fuels are not longer abundant and cost effective and how our society will change.
What are your thoughts on the issue of fossil fuel depletion? How did you come to appreciate the repercussions of these limits?
